Appearance: Clear, colourless, volatile liquid.
Solubility: Soluble in water, miscible with acetone, with ethanol(96 per cent) and with methylene chloride.
Identification A (By Boiling point): 76° - 78°C
Identification B (By IR): IR spectra of the sample should be concomitant with IR spectra of the standard.
Identification C (Reaction of Acetyl): A blue color should develop at the junction of the two drops; the color intensifies and persists for a short time.
Identification D (Reaction of esters): A bluish-red or red color should produce.
Appearance of solution: The solution should be clear and colorless
Acidity: The solution should remain pink for not less than 15 s.
Relative density (20°C): 0.898 - 0.902
Refractive index (20°C ± 0.5°C): 1.370 - 1.373
Reaction with sulphuric acid: The interface between the 2 liquids should not be colored.
