Description: Colourless crystals or a white or almost white crystalline powder.
Solubility: Very soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (95%)
Identification A (By Chemical test): On ignition gradually decomposes giving off an odour resembling that of burnt sugar
Identification B (By Chemical test): Solution should be strongly acidic
Identification C (Tartrate A): After charring, when ignited carbon monoxide which burns with blue flame should evolve.
Identification C (Tartrate B): An intense blue colour should produce.
Appearance of solution: Solution should be clear, and not more intensely coloured than reference solution YS6.
Specific optical rotation: +12.0° to +12.8°
Arsenic (As): NMT 2ppm
Heavy metals: NMT 10ppm
Chlorides: NMT 125ppm
Sulphate (SO4): NMT 150ppm
Oxalate: No opalescence should produce within 20 minutes
