Appearance: A white or colourless or almost white, slightly granular or fine powder, hygroscopic.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, more soluble in boiling water practically insoluble in ethanol (96%)
Identification(Sodium): A dense whiter precipitate should form.
Identification (Carbonate 1): Effervesce with acids, evolves a colorless gas that when pass into calcium hydroxide solution produces white precipitate immediately
Identification (Carbonate 2): A cold solution should be colored red by phenolphthalein solution
Identification (Carbonate 3): A white precipitate should form that dissolves on addition of an excess of hydrochloric acid
Identification (By chemical test): The solution should be strongly alkaline.
Identification (By Loss on drying): 1.0% max
Appearance of Solution: The solution should be clear and not more intensely colored than reference solution Y6.
