Appearance/Description: Syrupy liquid, unctuous to the touch, colourless or almost colourless, clear, very hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible with water and ethanol(96%), slightly soluble in acetone, practically insoluble in fatty oils and in essential oils.
Identification A (By Refractive index, 20±0.5°C): 1.470 - 1.475
Identification B (By IR): IR spectra of the sample solution should be concomitant with the reference spectrum of glycerin (85%)
Identification C (By Relative density): 1.258-1.268
Appearance of solution: Clear and colorless solution
Acidity or Alkalinity: Not more than 0.2ml of 0.1M sodium hydroxide is required to change the color of the indicator to pink.
Refractive index,20° C: 1.470 - 1.475
Aldehydes: 10ppm max
Ester: Not less than 8.0 ml of 0.1M hydrochloric acid should require to the change the colour of the indicator.
