Appearance/Description: White crystalline powder.
Solubility: Soluble in water; insoluble in alcohol.Practically insoluble in ethanol (95%)
Identification (Sodium): A dense precipitate should form.
Identification (Bicarbonate 1): Effervesce with acids, evolves a colorless gas that when pass into calcium hydroxide solution produces white precipitate immediately
Identification (Bicarbonate 2): A cold solution should be only slightly colored by phenolphthalein solution
Identification (By chemical test 1): A pale pink color should produce. On heating gas should evolve and the solution become red
Identification (By chemical test 2): white precipitate should form which dissolves on addition of an excess of hydrochloric acid.
Assay (on dried basis): 99.0% - 100.5%
Appearance of solution: Clear and colorless solution
Insoluble Substances: The solution should be complete and clear
Normal carbonate: The solution does not assume more than a faint pink color immediately.
Carbonate: The pH of freshly prepared solution should not be greater than 8.6
