Description: White or almost white, crystalline or granular powder or flakes, slightly hygroscopic.
Solubility: freely soluble in water
Identification A (Reaction (b) for Benzoate ): A white sublimate should deposit on the inner wall of the tube.
Identification A (Reaction (c) for Benzoate ): Melting point should be 120°C to 124°C after crystallization
Identification B (Reaction (a) for Sodium): A dense white precipitate should form
Appearance of solution: Solution should be clear and not more intensely colored than reference solution Y6
Acidity or Alkalinity: Not more than 0.2 ml of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide or 0.1 M hydrochloric acid should require to change the colour of the indicator.
Halogenated compounds: Ionized chlorine: 200 ppm max.
Halogenated compounds: Total chlorine: 300 ppm max.
