Appearance/Description: Colorless, cubic crystals or white crystals or crystalline powder. Has a saline taste.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water; and slightly more soluble in boiling water; soluble in glycerin; slightly soluble in alcohol. Practically insoluble in anhydrous ethanol.
Identification(Sodium): Dense white precipitate should form.
Identification (Chloride): A white curdled precipitate should form which insoluble in nitric acid but soluble in slight excess of 6N ammonia hydroxide
Appearance of Solution: Clear and colorless solution
Assay (Dried basis): 99.0% -100.5% of NaCl
Arsenic (As): 1 ppm max
Barium(Ba): Any opalescence in the test solution should not more intense than that in the reference solution
Ferrocyanide[Fe(CN6)]: No blue color should develop in 10 min.
Iodide(I): No blue color should observe in the mixture
Iron (Fe): 2ppm max
Bromide (Br): 100ppm max
Phosphate (PO4): 25ppm max
Magnesium and alkaline earth metals: NMT 100 ppm, calculated as Ca
Nitrite (NO2): Absorbance should not be more than 0.01 at 354 nm
Sulphate (SO4): 200ppm max
Acidity & alkalinity: NMT 0.5ml of 0.01N hydrochloric acid or 0.01N sodium hydroxide should require to change the color of this solution.
Loss on drying,105°C: NMT 0.5%
