Appearance/Description: White, odorless, crystalline or granular powder or flakes, slightly hygroscopic.
Solubility: freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in ethanol (90% v/v).
Identification (Reaction (b) for Benzoate: A white sublimate should deposite on the inner wall of the tube.
Identification (Reaction (c) for Benzoate ): Melting point should be 120°C to 124°C after crystallization
Identification (Reaction (a) for Sodium): A dense white precipitate should form
Identification (By IR): IR spectra of the sample should be concomitant with IR spectra of the standard
Identification (By Chromatography): The retention time of the major peak of the sample solution should correspond to that of the standard solution as obtained in the Assay
Appearance of solution: Solution should be clear and not more intensely colored than reference solution Y6.
Halogenated compounds: Ionized chlorine: 200 ppm max.
