Description: Clear liquid; colorless or slight yellow unless a color has been added. Has an aromatic odor and a bitter taste.
Identification A (By Chemical test): A white precipitate should form, and it should dissolve after adding 5 mL of alcohol.
Identification B (By Chemical test): A solution should yield a white, curdy precipitate which should insoluble in nitric acid but soluble in slight excess of 6 N ammonium hydroxide.
Identification C (By Chemical test): An orange-red color should produce.
Identification D (By Liquid Chromatography): The retention time of the major peaks for benzalkonium chloride of the sample solution correspond to those of the standard solution, as obtained in the test for ratio of Alkyl components.
Ratio of Alkyl components (n-C12H25 homolog): NLT 40.0% (On the solid basis)
Ratio of Alkyl components (n-C14H29 homolog): NLT 20.0% (On the solid basis)
Ratio of Alkyl components (The amount of the n-C12H25 and n-C14H29 homolog components together): NLT 70.0% (On the solid basis)
Assay (Total Alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides): Not less than 47.5% w/v and Not more than 52.5% w/v
Other components Alcohol content (If added): Not more than 10.0% v/v
Limit of Amines and Amine salts: The volume of titrant added between the two points of inflection should not more than 5.0 mL of 0.1 M tetra butyl ammonium hydroxide solution.
Limit of Benzyl alcohol, Benzaldehyde and (chloromethyl) Benzene) : Benzyl alcohol: Not more than 0.5%
Limit of Benzyl alcohol, Benzaldehyde and (chloromethyl) Benzene) :Benzaldehyde: Not more than 0.15%
Limit of Benzyl alcohol, Benzaldehyde and (chloromethyl) Benzene) :(Chloromethyl) Benzene: Not more than 0.05%
Acidity or Alkalinity: NMT 0.5 ml of 0.1N hydrochloric acid or 0.1N sodium hydroxide should require to change the color of the indicator.
