Specifications  
Description: A Clear, Colorless or almost colorless, syrupy liquid; odourless very hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible with water & with ethanol (95%) slightly soluble in acetone ; practically insoluble in ether and in fixed oils & volatile oils.
Identification A (By IR): IR spectra of the sample solution should be concomitant with the reference spectrum of glycerin (85%).
Identification B (By Chemical test): The blue color should not be diffuse into the lower layer.
Identification C (By Chemical test): Irritant vapours should evolve which blackens filter paper moistened with alkaline potassium mercuri-iodide solution.
Identification D (By Refractive index, 20±0.5°C): 1.470 to 1.475
Appearance of solution: Solution should be colourless.
Acidity or Alkalinity: Not more than 0.2 mL of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide should require to produce a pink colour.
Heavy metals: 5ppm max.
Iron (Fe): 4ppm max.
Chloride (Cl): 25ppm max.
Sulphate (SO4): 30ppm max.
Aldehydes and reducing substances: Any color produce should not be more intense than that obtained in a standard preparation.
Ester: Not less than 8.0ml of 0.1M hydrochloric acid should require to decolorise the solution.
Ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and related substances: The area of any secondary peak in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution should be less than the area of the peak corresponding to diethylene glycol in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution..
Sugars: The solution should remain blue and no precipitate should produce.
Sulphated ash: NMT 0.01%
Water: NMT 2.0%
Assay (on Anhydrous basis): 98.0% - 101.0%
Total aerobic microbial count: NMT 100 CFU/gm
Total combined yeast and mould count: NMT 10 CFU/gm
Bacterial endotoxin test: NMT 5 EU/gm
