Description: Colourless crystals or a white or almost white crystalline powder.
Solubility: Very soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (95%)
Identification A (By Chemical test): On ignition gradually decomposes giving off an odour resembling that of burnt sugar
Identification B (By Chemical test): Solution should be strongly acidic
Identification C (Tartrate A): An intense violet or purple colour should produced.
Identification C (Tartrate B): A dark blue colour that changes to red when the solution is cooled and poured into water is produced.
Appearance of solution: Solution should be clear, and not more intensely coloured than reference solution YS6.
Specific optical rotation: +12.0° to +12.8°
