Description: A clear, colourless, viscous liquid; practically odourless; hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible with water, with ethanol (95%) with acetone and with chloroform.
Identification A (By Chemical test): A violet color should appear slowly.
Identification B (By Chemical test): A Pleasant odor develops.
Identification C (By Chemical test): No sharp, acrid smell of acrolin should perceptible.
Appearance of Solution: Clear and colourless.
Acidity: Not more than 0.05 mL of 0.1 M of sodium hydroxide should require to change the color to blue.
Boiling range: 184° to 189°C
Relative density (25°C): 1.035 - 1.040
Refractive index (20°C ± 0.5°C): 1.431 - 1.433
Heavy metals: 5 ppm max
Oxidising substances: Not more than 0.2 mL of 0.05M of sodium thiosulphate should require.
Reducing substances: The solution should not change its appeareane within 5 min.
Ethylene glycol and Diethylene glycol: No peaks corresponding to ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol should obtain in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution.
