Description: A colourless or slightly yellow, viscous liquid; hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible in all proportion with water, with ethanol (95%) and with ether.
Identification A (By Chemical test): Aldehyde should evolve.
Identification B (By Chemical test): A dark green ring appears at the interface of the two liquids.
Identification C (By Chemical test): Solution should be strongly acidic.
Appearance of Solution: The substance is not more intensely coloured than reference solution YS6.
Arsenic (As): NMT 1ppm
Heavy metals: NMT 10ppm
Citric, oxalic and phosphoric acids: Any opalescence in the solution is not more intense than that in a mixture of 5 mL of the test solution and 1 mL of water.
Ether insoluble substances: The solution is not more opalescent than the solvent used for the test.
Volatile fatty acids: No unpleasant odour resembling that of lower fatty acids is recognizable immediately after opening the flask.
Methanol and methyl esters: Any color in the solution is not more intense than that of 1 mL of reference solution.
Reducing sugars: No red or greenish precipitate should produce.
Sulphated ash: NMT 0.1%
